I have just found your excellent forum and wondered if any one can help me. I am the son Wally Smith a former flight engineer with Bomber Command . After dad died I set up a web site as a tribute to him. raf-bombercommand - Home. I would really appreciate anyone who can give me more information to help me expand the site. I am particularly interested in Lancaster ED995 as my dad did all of his first tour in this one plane! Andy Smith E mail andy@raf-bombercommand.co.uk
From one Andy to another, welcome aboard, mate. You've come to the right place to ask that question. I'm amazed your Dad did all of his first tour on the same Lanc. You wouldn't want to fly in any other! I can only imagine the affinity they had with her. I have several vintage trucks in various states of completeness and am familiar with some of their habits but they came to me with at least 40 years of life behind them already.
Not just the name that links us. After dad left 463 squadron he became a haulage contactor. So I have been brought up with trucks all my life. I spent 20 years selling 6X6 and 4X4s for road and runway clearance!
Welcome to the forum Andy, I do not have any info on ED995 as my project is collecting photos of headstones of those 11,037 RAAF members that died during WW2. As there were no Aussies on the aircraft when it was eventually shot down on the 9th of October 1943, I have not investigated that flight. Good luck with your research.
