Hyde Burton : Rugby Player

    This is one of a series of posts to mark the international Rugby players who served in, and survived, The Great War. If anyone has further information on the men concerned, I’d be most grateful if it could be added to the thread.

    Burton, Hyde Clark played for England

    Internationals: 1: 1926 W=

    Hyde Burton was born on 10 June 1898

    Played as a Wing for: RNEC Keyham, Bishops Stortford, Richmond, Royal Navy, Barbarians, Eastern Counties

    Profession: Royal Navy/chartered accountant

    War service: Royal Navy, served in the Grand Fleet and with Destroyers in the Mediterranean until he retired in 1921.

    Remarks: Played for Barbarians: v Cardiff (21-25) v Swansea (8-16) in 1925. He served as a Commander during the 1939-1945 War in Naval control in West Africa, and was he was later in trade and naval intelligence at the Admiralty. He attended the Quebec Conference in 1943, and retired in 1945.

    He died not so long ago Gareth ! .... amazing to think that he lived to such a good age isn't it ? :)
