.... he was a bomber pilot ! Flight Lieutenant Kenneth Wolstenholme DFC* (deceased) Ken Wolstenholme was born in Worsley, Lancashire. He attended Farnworth Grammar School and started his career as a journalist with a newspaper in Manchester, before joining the RAF as a bomber pilot with 107 Sqn flying Blenheims before joining 8 Group Pathfinders flying Mosquitos. He completed 100 ops - and won the DFC and bar. After the war he became a famous sports broadcaster with the BBC. He died 26th March 2002.
He seems to have been awarded both DFCs whilst with 105 Squadron. Distinguished Flying Cross. 30th June, 1944 Kenneth WOLSTENHOLME (121908), R.A.F.V.R., 105 Sqn. Since being awarded, the D.F.C., this officer has continued to operate with noteworthy ability as a pilot, and haB shown outstanding courage, judgment and tenacity of purpose. In the most adverse circumstances he has achieved results of the highest order No.107 Sqn RAF - Squadron Profile.
Got my references mixed up. Checked the DFC dates posted above so have pulled out Stuart Scott's Mosquito Thunder instead. Page 82: Page 131: Page 133 Page 137 Page 139 Page 141 Page 145 Following a squadron move to RAF Bourn: Page 153 DFC and Bar certainly justified.
Oh my goodness Andy !! .... thank you for that ! Isn't it weird how you watch people for years with no idea of what has gone on before in their lives ?? RIP Kenneth Wolstenholme
No worries, Annie. I was thinking about the soccer, sorry, football player who continued his career after the war. While I was typing the above, I was thinking what it must have been like to see a Mossie after the war and the huge change it must have been.
