If I was an American soldier from New York how would I have returned home to America when the war was over? Would I have been sent back in a boat then caught a train to grand central station?

You would have been sent back on a troop ship along with the other members of your Division, most likely embarking at Brest. You then would have crossed the North Atlantic and docked in either Hoboken, NJ or at the Port of New York. From there you would have been sent to a camp area pending discharge. After discharge the government provided money to get you back home to the original point of induction.
