Interested in family history

  1. Greetings,

I have long been interested in our family history and have never before been able to clarify details of my great uncle's history, although I do have quite a bit of background information on him. My family have a distinguished military history, though we are not supposed to acknowledge it as they were all born in, or were the sons and daughters of citizens of the Republic of Ireland. My own father has a perfectly plausible reason as to why he joined up during WWII: poverty and lack of opportunity in Ireland. Politics had nothing to do with it. I suspect the majority of service personnel from Eire joined up for similar reasons. Nevertheless, they fought a great evil and we all owe them a debt of gratitude.

Happy to hear from or answer questions from any interested parties and hope you all feel likewise.

    Hi... welcome to Militarian!

I think if you could post a few more details... such as the regiment in which your father served, and the major battles in which he participated we will be able to help you

Welcome aboard! I think that the story of the Irish during the war is one of the more interesting among neutral countries, and one I don't know a whole lot about. I look forward to learning more from you. :)
