Hi It has taken me a while to find the regiment of a relative as I always thought men would join up to their local regiment. He lived in Cumberland (UK) but it turns out that he was in the Cheshire Regiment. Does anyone know why that might be the case? Thanks Maggie
Maggie, I know that my own father was called up as a conscript. He lived in London but was allocated the 9th Battalion of the Royal Sussex Rgt. It just depended on who had most need. Not sur about volunteers tho.
As stated above, in wartime "local" stops being important. You will get English in Scots regiments and visa versa.
