    This is one of a series of posts to mark the international Rugby players who died during The Great War. If anyone has further information on the men concerned, I’d be most grateful if it could be added to the thread.

    Robertson, Lewis played for Scotland

    Internationals: 9 : 1908 E+ ; 1911 W- ; 1912 W- I- E+ SA- ; 1913 W- I+ E-

    Lewis Robertson was born on 4 August 1883, Hawthornden, son of James and Agnes Robertson of 7 Eglinton Crescent, Edinburgh

    Played as a Forward for: Cargilfield School, Fettes College, RMA Sandhurst, London Scottish, United Services Portsmouth, The Army

    Profession: The Army

    Remarks: Played for the Officers of the Army v the Officers of the Royal Navy in December 1907 (0-15), 1909 (0-25), 1910 (10-19), 1911 (22-13), 1912 (8-16), 1913 (8-18) and 1914 (26-14). He also played for Combined Navy and Army (6-8) v the 1908-1909 Wallabies.

    War service: Captain, 1st Battalion, Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders, 1st Brigade, 1st Division.

    He died of wounds on 3 November 1914, at Ypres, and is buried in Ypres Reservoir Cemetery, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium [Grave II. A. 4.].

    The Scottish Rugby Union has a memorial at Murrayfield to the Scottish rugby players who fell - but there are no names inscribed .... I'm sure Lewis Robertson is remembered there !

    Just as an aside ... have you asked Dick about him on the Cargilfield School, Fettes College, rolls Gareth ?

    Fettes College WW1 Memorial .... a little hard to see .... but Lewis is there !
