Hello, I've joined because I inherited a huge collection of wartime letters from my father, written to my mother, along with uncles' letters too. I am finally sorting, ordering and reading them. My father, Harry Whittaker, from Lancashire, seems to have trained in Port Talbot, Spondon near Derby, Goxhill and Newton Stewart, before being posted to North Africa, Italy and Greece. He was in the Royal Artillery and also the Kings' Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, and was a gunner. He fought at Monte Cassino. I know it's very unlikely anyone reading would recognise his name, but perhaps a few my be able to give me information - any - that will increase my understanding of my dad's life at that time.

I could recommend some books but other than that I cant help a

great deal. Rick Atkinsons The Day of Battle covers Italy and Sicily. Its an easy read but accurate.
