    Lou Phillips helped Wales win the Triple Crown in 1900.

    When war broke out he refused a commission and enlisted in the Royal Welch Fusiliers. He became a sergeant and was killed in action at Cambrai on 14 March, 1916, aged 38.

    Place Of Birth - Newport (Wales)

    Newport born - attended Monmouth HS. Played with halfback Llewellyn Lloyd 1897-1901. Good kicker. 4 Welsh caps 1900-1901 (3 at OH / 1 at SH) -curtailed by knee injury. Welsh Amateur Golf Champion 1907 and 1912 and R/U 1913 Irish Championship.
    Sergeant - having refused a commission - in Royal Welch Fusiliers in WW1. He had joined the Public Schools Brigade.
    Died in action at Cambrai, March 14th 1916.

    Louis Phillips was born on 24 February 1878, in Newport, son of Charles and Rose Phillips.

    Louis Phillips was born on 24 February 1878, in Newport, son of Charles and Rose Phillips.

    Remarks: L A Phillips made 90 appearances for Newport and scored more than 9 tries and kicked 2 dropped goals. He was the amateur golf champion of Wales in 1907 and 1912 as well as being runner-up in the Irish championship in 1913.

    War service: Joined the Public Schools Battalion, but refused a commission; then PS/5457, Sergeant, 20th Battalion (3rd Public Schools), Royal Fusiliers, 98th Brigade, 33rd Division. Rugby Who's Who incorrectly has him in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers.

    He was killed in action on 14 March 1916, at Cambrin, and is buried in Cambrin Churchyard Extension, Pas de Calais, France [Grave L1. 10B].
