World war hero dies at 85 - Doncaster Today

A MAJOR who served during the Second World War and received a Military Cross for rescuing his troops who were under fire has died.
Major Neville Richardson MC, of Bessacarr, died suddenly at home home following a heart attack at the age of 85.

His family spoke about the well-respected ex-serviceman's distinguished career and said they will miss his "love for life".

One of his daughters, Jennifer Johnson, of Lincoln, said: "It was very sudden and it's a big shock to us all. He was quite a character, had a love for life and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends."

Born in India, Mr Richardson joined the Army at 18 during the Second World War. During his time he fought in Burma and won a Military Cross in 1944 for his bravery in the Ngakydauk Pass, Myanmar, as he rescued his troops from enemy fire.

When his family moved to Doncaster in 1948, Mr Richardson and his wife, Dulcie, whom he married in 1947, followed and set up home in Bawtry Road where they had two children, Jennifer, a university lecturer, and Ann, a solicitor.

Mr Richardson worked for several companies with his last stint being at Gillette Surgical before retiring in 1983.

He was president of the Doncaster branch of The Burma Star Association, past chairman of the Fellowship of the Services and also a past master of Don Valley Lodge 3890, Danum Mark Lodge 398 and a senior provincial officer in both orders.

Mrs Richardson, the former deputy head at Mount Carmel School, died seven years ago at the age of 75. The couple had seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
