Not unusual to see no mention made of the people like Australian Sir Howard Florey, Boris Chain and their team, N.G. Heatley, A.D. Gardner, J. Orr-Ewing, M.A. Jennings and his wife Ethel Florey who took penicillin from a laboratory curiosity, fermented it in pots and pans proved it on animals and clinically tested it on a human.

Sir Howard Florey took it to America as Britain did not have the money or the facilities to manufacture it. Florey was a pathologist who gave away the rights of the discovery to the Americans. (First patent application for penicillin lodged by Dr Andrew Moyer an American in 1941.) Florey did not patent Penicillin because he believed it should belong to humanity. Big business was not as righteous.

Sir Alexander Fleming
whilst the discoverer of the Penicillin could not make it work and did not take any part in its refining and manufacture.

The first Penicillin used in a war zone was in Cairo in 1942?.

This product was made available to allied personal in New Guinea as early as December 1943 due to the untiring efforts of another Australian Percival Landon Bazeley - MB, BS, CBE, OBE

Not surprised, Geoff.

I reckon the Australians should be given credit for helping with the manufacture of penicillin, and the first use of it in a theatre of war.
