Precious jewellery stolen in raid - Scarborough Evening News

A SCARBOROUGH woman is devastated after jewellery, including items given to her by a decorated war hero, were stolen from her home.
Pat Hunter, 70, had about 14 pieces of jewellery and cash stolen after thieves broke into her flat in Westbourne Grove.

The items included an RAF wings brooch with a silver centre, and a gold engagement ring with an oval sapphire stone, from her late partner William Garth Trotter.

Mr Trotter, who died two years ago aged 86, served in the Royal Air Force during the Second World War and was a member of a Pathfinder squadron which marked targets ahead of the Dambusters raid.

Mrs Hunter, who was a shop assistant at Costcutters in Ramshill Road for 14 years, said: "I want my property back. How can I replace them?
"The brooch means a lot to me, it's sentimental and there are a lot of memories in it."

The jewellery was stolen on Monday between 1pm and 4pm.

Other items ranged from a brass antique wind-up clock, with a white face and Roman numerals, to a gold elephant brooch with a gold chain and a gold engagement ring with baguette diamonds.

There were also a number of pieces of dress jewellery taken including various stoned pendants, earrings and rings.

Some of these were contained in display boxes.

Mr Trotter and Mrs Hunter were together for 20 years.

For his service to the air force, Mr Trotter was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Distinguished Flying Medal as well as receiving two citations – one signed by King George VI.

When he left the service he worked as a coach builder for 26 years at Plaxton and ran three hotels in Scarborough, the Craythorne, the Brookfield and Lowdale Manor.

Before retiring in June 1984, Mr Trotter ran Hillcrest Stores in Hillcrest Avenue.

Police want to speak to witnesses who may have seen anything suspicious around the Westbourne Grove area and anyone who may have been offered to buy any items of jewellery since Monday afternoon.

This makes me so mad, the low lifes wouldn't have a speck of courage compared.
