A Windsor man who helped Britain win the Second World War by designing the Hawker Hurricane is to be rescued from relative obscurity with a memorial in his home town. A replica Hawker Hurricane is planned to commemorate Sir Sydney Camm.

Sir Sydney Camm started off with relatively humble beginnings. Born in Alma Road, Windsor, the designer created innovative planes such as the Hawker Hurricane, which was crucial to Britain's success during the Battle of Britain.

Sometimes described as the 'Brunel of aeronautical engineers' Sir Sydney's remarkable achievements led him to become the world's greatest aircraft designer.

However, he is virtually unknown outside the world of aviation and more importantly, in his home town of Windsor.

Now former RAF pilot John Foster is chairing a project by the Sir Sydney Camm Commemorative Society to create a memorial to Sir Sydney.

He told BBC Radio Berkshire's Henry Kelly: "Sir Sydney was the chief designer for Hawker Siddeley. He was born and raised in Windsor, started off as a carpenter's assistant, and then became a chief draftsman with Hawker Siddeley.

"He came up with revolutionary designs, from the bi-plane onwards. His most famous plane was the Hurricane."

The project to create a memorial to Sir Sydney started after a memorial service was held in Windsor to commemorate the 40th anniversary of his death.

The council have now donated an area in Alexandra Gardens by the river for the memorial.

Mr Foster said: "The memorial will be a full size replica which will be mounted on a plinth, in colours of the day."

Now the group hope to raise £50,000 to create the memorial sculpture.

Rightly so too and he didn't stop with the Hurri.

The designer of perhaps the most beautiful biplanes (Hart, Nimrod, Fury etc) and almost certainly the best looking jet ever (Hunter).
