    I found this ....

This brass uniface memorial plaque was presented by the British government after the end of the First World War to the family of Lieutenant George Masterman Thompson of The Royal Scots. Thompson was the first British army officer to be killed in the war. Such plaques were given to the next of kin of all those who lost their lives during the First World War. In all, some 750,000 were struck.

The Royal Scots - Items of uniform worn by Lieutenant G.W. Thompson

George Thompson was serving with the Gold Coast Regiment in West Africa. He was killed in the Togoland campaign on 22 August 1914, 18 days after Britain declared war on Germany and the same day that British troops in France first came into contact with the enemy.
