Those memorialized by this marker are the men who deserted the Wehrmacht during the Second World War. 15,000 men were executed. The idea for the memorial emerged in 1985 at the annual meeting of the organization, "Reservists Refuse". They decided to build a memorial to deserters.

I'd be interested to know what you all think, particularly those who have had experience in any of the services.

This is a diffcult one because as a ex-service I would not condone anyone deserting from British forces but I can understand why those who deserted the wartime wehrmacht di so.

In the latter stages of the war, many innocent men were shoot by roving parties checking for deserters and they deserve a fitting memorial.
