    A great read, thank you, DL.

    I'm amazed she didn't get destroyed by raids on French ports and the like. A very lucky ship...and small - less than 45 metres long! Brave sailors indeed.

    What could EMPO have meant as claimed by the Mossie crews as being painted on her side?

    David, an interesting story, thanks for posting it.

    Cargo ship KERLOGUE official number 166367 built in 1938 for Wexford SS Co Ltd. Wexford.
    1958 renamed MUNKEN.
    Capsized off Lindesnes 7.7.60.

    I assumed that this was a mis-reading for EIRE. Even if they thought she was flying the French flag, were French merchant ships considered enemy by the RAF? The crew were very lucky not to have been killed.

    The Irish were sometimes criticised by the British (and the Germans) for not joining in the war, but in the end it was useful to both sides to have some neutral nations around. And in this case, the neutral seamen put themselves at considerable risk to save lives.
