Memorial for fallen heroes

A NEW memorial to commemorate service men and women who have died since the end of the Second World War is to go up in Neath.

David John, chairman of the Neath branch of the Royal Welsh Association, said he first put forward the idea during last year's Battle of Britain Day.

He revealed the memorial at the Gnoll gates would commemorate all personnel from across the three services and feature a tri-service badge.

"We will incorporate all the services with the anchor and rope for the Navy, the crossed swords for the Army and the eagle for the RAF," he said.

Work is due to start on November 12 after Neath Port Talbot Council gave it the go-ahead.

Mr John said the memorial would be made of local stone, with the dedication inscribed in marble.

It would have no finishing date, as it would apply to all service personnel killed on duty since 1945.

Explaining his reasons for backing a new memorial, Mr John said: "Since the end of the Second World War, servicemen have been killed in places such as Palestine, Korea, Borneo, Kenya and Cyprus."

He said he did not want to simply collate names and instead chose to have a general memorial in honour of all those who have died.

The branch is seeking donations to fund the project, expected to cost in the region of £5,000.

Mr John said supporters of the memorial had written to organisations across Neath Port Talbot.

Among those that have agreed to help is Neath Chamber of Trade, which voted in favour of donating £200 at its September meeting. Stone Station, in Ystalyfera, has also backed the memorial with a donation.

Mr John said: "We would like to thank Neath Port Talbot Council and the others that have helped support the project."
