At St Nicholas' church in Brockenhurst there are around 100 graves of soldiers who were amongst thousands injured in France during World War 1. They were brought for treatment at Brockenhurst Hospital during wartime. The graves are cared for by the Imperial War Commission. Included in graves within St Nicholas' churchyard are

    The New Zealand Cemetery

On the east side of the central level of the cemetery are the graves of more than a hundred New Zealand, Indian and other soldiers who died in the field hospitals at Brockenhurst during and after the first World War. By order of the Imperial War Graves Commission the original white wooden crosses were replaced in 1924 by engraved head-stones, and the impressive memorial cross was erected in 1927. An annual service is held here on the Sunday next to Anzac Day, attended by a representative of the New Zealand High Commission and of the New Zealand Forces.

New Zealand War Graves - St Nicholas

St Nicholas' churchyard contains 106 War Graves, of which one hundred are in the New Zealand plot. Of the 106, 93 are New Zealand graves and three Indian; and the graves of three unidentified Belgian civilians (employed at the Sopley Forestry camp) are also in the plot.

From 1916 to 1919 No.1 New Zealand General Hospital was at Brockenhurst, in the huts previously used as the Lady Hardinge (Indian) Hospital.

On the East side of the New Zealand plot is a memorial incorporating a Cross.
