Norman Owen, who has died aged 91, helped to save the tanker Ohio as she sailed to relieve the island of Malta in 1942, and ended a short diving career when he had to save his own life by amputating his fingers.

Reading Charles Page's Wings of Destiny I noted that the Ohio helped keep an eye out for HMAS Sydney survivors when steaming towards Fremantle. The text said she was the world's largest oil tanker at the time. Certainly got around a bit!

What an amazing man. Taught himself to dive. RIP.

Fair winds and a calm sea

What an amazing man and what an amazing story. I dont know how I missed this one. It was a miracle that the OHIO got through but no wonder with the likes of Norman Warden Owen and his shipmates aboard. RIP.

Fair winds and calm seas, sailor.

Quite apart from his determination and courage, I wonder how many young men we now have with his kind of practical skills as a mechanic and a seaman.
