http://www.nytimes.com/2007/04/27/nyregion/27george.html?_r=1&ref=nyregion&oref=slogin The story involves Liberty Hall, which is the museum to visit as part of a Battle of Springfield tour. It has sword-slash scars on the main staircase banister said to be inflicted by dragoons frustrated in their search for intelligence and/or plunder (?)* in the Hall, which was NJ patriot Governor Livingston's mansion. *The details are in one of Thomas Fleming's early books, "Forgotten Victory: The Battle for New Jersey, 1780." I like Fleming, but it seems like so many of his book jacket blurbs say he's describing "forgotten" or "untold" events that are neither forgotten nor untold.
