Anybody read Francis Parkman's "France and England in North America"? Basically the 200 year story of New France. I know he gets a lot of flak in modern times for calling a spade a spade but, I think it's the most fascinating set of books I've ever read!
I have read them and found them fascinating. Yes, it is 19th century prose, which modern historians tend to ridicule, but it is good reading - most modern historians only wish they could write that well!! And he had access to some sources and letters that aren't around any more (though unfortunately I can't remember which - I remember only reading about his use of sources). Well worth reading, in my opinion as well.
