    This is one of a series of posts to mark the international Rugby players who served in, and survived, The Great War. If anyone has further information on the men concerned, I’d be most grateful if it could be added to the thread.

    Clauss, Paul Robert Adolph played for Scotland

    Internationals: 6 : 1891 W+ (2t) I+ (1t) E+ (1d) ; 1892 W+ E- ; 1895 I+

    Paul Clauss was born on 22 June 1868, in Munich, Germany.

    Played as a Wing for: Loretto School, Oxford University (Blue 1889-1891), Barbarians

    Profession: Schoolmaster

    War service: Lieutenant, unattached list, Territorial Force

    Remarks: Played for Barbarians: v Hartlepool Rovers (10-7) v Huddersfield (9-2) v Cardiff (3-14) and v Newport (0-19) in 1893.

    He died on 21 April 1945, Cheltenham

    16th December 1891. 19th Annual 'Varsity Rugby Match. Played at Queen's Club (West Kensington, London). Attendance: 8,000. The referee was H.L. Ashmore and the two touch judges were P. Christopherson and E.T. Gordon. Cambridge won this match by a score of 2 tries to nil (4 points to 0 points). The two teams included 13 international players and were as follows:

    Paul Clauss of Scotland was a member of the team that toured South Africa in 1891

    The first ever match played by a representative British side in South Africa took place at the Newlands ground. Bill MaClagan of Scotland led the side to a convincing win in the tour opener against Cape Clubs. Paul Clauss and Randolph Aston each scored a brace of tries for the tourists.

    According to his Wikipedia entry he wrote a pamphlet about the WW1 battlefields.
    "In 1916 Clauss produced a booklet of sketched maps, the work, Sketch Maps illustrating Important Phases in the Great War, with historical notes. August, 1914-May, 1916 was published by Blackie and Sons of London"
