I've been going through my pictures and NARA pictures and came across this one which was one of the first I decided I wanted to keep ... it touched me very much ... thought I'd share it ! "Standing in the grassy sod bordering row upon row of white crosses in an American cemetery, two dungaree-clad Coast Guardsmen pay silent homage to the memory of a fellow Coast Guardsman who lost his life in action in the Ryukyu Islands."
Any idea who the sailor was, Annie? Hadn't realised the Coast Guard was in action in/around the Ryuku Islands.
I'm not sure about the sailor yet ... but I believe it was this sinking ... still researching ... ! ( wish Geoff would get his engine up and running !! ) AFD-1 Class Small Auxiliary Floating Dry Dock: Laid down (date and place unknown) Commissioned USS AFD-13, date unknown, CAPT. G.H. Lyttle. in command AFD-13 saw service at Majuro Atoll, Marshall Islands and at Okinawa Struck from the Naval Register, date unknown Final Disposition, AFD-13 sunk off Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 16 September 1945.
Sept 16, 1945? That's so sad. Looks like a typhoon was responsible: Typhoons and Hurricanes: Pacific typhoon, October 1945 AFD-13 in action as it were: http://www.navsource.org/archives/11/111926601.jpg
