I wouldn't doubt that this form of retribution did occur however with many judgements, they are made today and not based on the times of 65 years ago.
Interestingly, the mention of the wife who committed suicide several days after her husband was hanged does not say how she died. She hung herself out of grief and the reporter, in his narration, indicated that these hangings had introduced a new "way" of death to the New Guineans.
