Has any one heard about an sailor on an Aussie battleship, that was being attacked by the Japs during ww2 with an sailor strapping himself to the ship, while the ship was floundering while he was firing at the jap planes. Was it the HMAS Sydney? He's actually a long distance family member of mine. Does anybody heard about that story? Can you help? Cheers
Hi firefoxy, welcome to Chat. That story does ring a bell, and I believe we mentioned it in another thread. I just can't remember the name, for now. I'm sure Andy or Spidge will know
Hi Firefoxy, welcome aboard. The young man you're thinking of is Teddy Sheean. He wasn't on the Sydney as she was sunk before the Japanese entered the war. He was on HMAS Armidale, a corvette. The link below will give you a good overview of your relative and, I hope you agree, if ever there was a case for being awarded a Victoria Cross... How did you find out about your relation to him? http://ww2chat.com/forums/biographi...ddy-sheean-not-just-ordinary-18-year-old.html
Yes that's him. My uncle Darryl sheean is his Newthew. My auntie told me the story long time ago, so i could not remember much. thanks guys. PS- Yes i think he deserves one Vic Cross. Cheers.

Here ya go: HMAS Sheean - Royal Australian Navy Happy to help. It's what Chat is all about as well as bringing attention to the lesser-publicised contributors to the war.
When you read about the acts of bravery such as Teddy Sheean, it makes one proud to be an Australian.
