Arthur Barnard was born 15 April 1892 in England and came to Canada when twelve years of age in care of the Barnardo Home. He lived with a farmer near Orono for some years, but had been employed in the rubber factory at Bowmanville previous to his enlisting. Barnard was small of stature, but large of heart, and cheerful under all circumstances. He was a young man respected by all who became acquainted with him. At the time of going overseas, he was a bugler for the 136th Battalion, with which he trained at Barriefield and Valcartier. He went overseas in September 1916 and in a very short time was in France. He met his death at Vimy Ridge where so many of the old 136th men fell on Easter Monday 1917. His burial place is unknown.
