I remember when I was in Wales in '99 (only been back once since for a very quick three day drive from south to north unfortunately), I was on a bus from Llanberis heading to Caernarfon when it stopped at a small village on the way. A young mum and her little son hopped on, he can't have been more than four. The boy was talking away in Welsh at a fair clip and I was amazed to hear such a, to me, complex language (it probably isn't but it sounds great!) coming out of someone so young especially as he probably knew English as well. I know this all sounds small-minded but I guess it was more me knowing but not realising that languages other than English survive in the UK...and that's a bloody good thing.
