I don't have much else on the man, but a little more on F5950, his aeroplane. The Australian Maj A H O'Hara-Wood was credited with a shared victory over a DFW two-seater while flying it on 1 August 1918. It was badly shot about in the action in which 2Lt Gilpin-Brown was credited with a victory on 17 September, and he had to return home at 50 feet. On 1 October F5950 spun into the ground and burnt out after take off, 2Lt Herbert Clarke was killed.

Former Flight Cadet R D Gilpin-Brown was given a temporary commission as a Second Lieutenant (flying officer) in the RAF on 22 July 1918. If he previously served in the RFC, it must have been as an NCO.
