    This is one of a series of posts to mark the international Rugby players who served in, and survived, The Great War. If anyone has further information on the men concerned, I’d be most grateful if it could be added to the thread.

    Hanvey, Robert Jackson played for England

    Internationals: 4 : 1926 W= I- F+ S-

    Robert Hanvey was born on 16 August 1899

    Played as a Prop for: Aspatria, Blennerhasset, Cumberland and Westmorland

    Profession: Shoe repairer in Blennerhasset.

    War service: 49261, Private, East Lancashire Regiment from 1918

    Remarks: Robert Hanvey played for Cumberland and Westmorland 60 times from 1919, including the Championship winning team of 1924; he was captain 1927-1928, and President 1956-1958. International Panel Referee 1937-1939 and President of the Cumberland and Westmorland Referees’ Society. He was the only person to be elected a life member of the Cumberland and Westmorland Ruby Union. He completed half a century of service to Cumberland Rugby in 1969, having been a player, selector, referee, official and President.
