I can't pretend that I understood all of that but well done to them all. I couldn't make the leap of faith between my printer and nail varnish to solar cells!!!! I wonder why it is only being considered for developing nations? Why would it not reduce our requirement for more power stations, thereby potentially saving money and reducing the terrorist threat if we have to go nuclear? I also wonder if it would be more cost effective to invest in the mass production of solar panels and a program to convert our rooves accordingly? .... answers on a postcard?
Down here, CT, all new houses have to have solar panels on the roof and the government pays a subsidy to the homeowner of about $8,000 IIRC but it is now means tested...makes you wonder how serious the current government is about climate change. They do a lot of talking about it! I think it would take a "brave" government of any country to say "stuff it" and roll out a programme that gets some sort of energy saving into every building. Yes, it'd cost a lot of money but what an investment! The last government ordered normal light globes to be phased out by 2010. Great idea. More needs to be done though. I'd love to know how you can generate your own power through sun or wind and sell it back to the grid or pass the surplus back to the grid. If I knew how to do it...I think the "coolness" of this new technology gets me as excited by its energy saving abilities!
We had to have a HIPS pack for our bungalow. This downgraded the energy efficiency of a very cost efficient, insulated home because we also have the option to have an open fire and we are using up the last supplies of old light bulbs before using the new low voltage ones (which incidentally make my head ache). He seriously suggested replacing our boiler, dishwasher etc. because newer appliances are more energy efficient (ours are only a couple of years old). I cannot get my head round how it can be more beneficial to scrap what could be millions of appliances in favour of newer ones. Surely it would be more sensible to have a program of encouraging the really ancient ones to be replaced first.
Because developing nations dont have multiple computers, multiple tvs, air conditioners, 40 light bulbs, and electric cars to try and power. :>
Probably, if it was like paper I would hand them out to the hoodlums so they could put those up instead of the dumb tagging and poster pasting. I would love to see one of those printers at the copy shops Ooh, I could invent a solar powered DC-3 too! hehe
