The families of three South Australian airmen who took part in the daring Dambusters bombing raid in World War II will gather in Adelaide this morning at the unveilling of a new memorial commemorating the raid.

Airmen David Shannon, Frederick Spafford and Robert Hay took part in the operation in Germany 65 years ago today.

Dambusters historian David MacFarlane says all three survived the incredibly dangerous raid but only Mr Shannon survived the war.

The Dambusters raid saw RAF Lancaster bombers dropping bouncing bombs to destroy dam walls in the Ruhr Valley.

Mr MacFarlane says the airmen had to bomb with maximum precision.

"The Dambusters raid was a strategically important mission," he said.

"It attacked the Mohne, Eder and Sorpe dams in the Ruhr Valley and as a consequence of the destruction of those dams considerable amount of damage was done to the German war machinery."

In England overnight the the 65th anniversary was commemorated by the only remaining flying Lancaster bomber, which took to the air over a dam which was used for Dambusters training runs.
