Okay, something a bit different from a Spitfire thread! Post-war aircraft but excellent pedigree and a stunning aircraft :becky: http://www.ezellaviation.com/Past Pages/seafire.htm Good book with cover artwork much better in the flesh! http://www.amazon.co.uk/They-Gave-Seafire-Airlifes-Classics/dp/1840372451
It was a beautiful aircraft, that did an excellent job. Unfortunately, it gets a lot of flak because it is always being compared with US carrier aircraft. And like in a game of top trumps, they always pick on it's weakest point which was it's relative range.
Spit was more of an interceptor I always thought. Not really a loiterer but more of a defender. She did okay with drop tanks though but that's cos she's a legend!
An interesting performance comparison here between the Spitfire Mark IX and the Me 109 G Spitfire Mk IX versus Me 109 G - Flight Testing
