Hi All, I've been 'out of the loop' of late as I'm undertaking a fairly demanding course. Having a quick browse, there have been some great topics bouncing around. Off topic, but possibly of interest, I updated my website with another article. This one is about an engine 'blowing up' on an aircraft over the Aussie outback. Titled 'The Big Bang' the link's at the bottom of the page. Owen Zupp When I 'surface' again, I'll endeavour to post another snippet from 'Down to Earth' as the first one was well received. Cheers Owen
That certainly sounded like brown-trouser time! Did you ever find out why the cylinder head failed? But it sounded like a fantastic job, doing what one loves over beautiful country. Cheers for sharing the article.
Hi Kyt, They found that cracking of the cylinders on that type of engine was not a unique occurrence. The severity of the failure really only hit home after I'd landed. However, I had one stop on me altogether over rather angry terrain some years later and got a ride home in a helicopter. That one got my attention! Cheers Owen
Hi Kyt, Here's the story of what happened on that occasion. Again it's reproduced due to the folks at AUSTRALIAN AVIATION MAGAZINE View attachment 1469 As before, off topic, but I hope you enjoy the story anyway. Cheers, Owen
Owen Just how far apart were the trees you had to pass between in the forced landing in the TB20? Adrian
Certainly pays to practice, practice, practice...and then practice some more. Great read Owen, thank you.
Hi again all, No worries Andy. I'm lucky to have the opportunity to share these experiences through the magazines and the like. As for the trees Adrian, it's a while back now, but to the best of my recollection I'd guess at least twice the wingspan. Cheers Owen
