    This was very interesting.
The Antwerp Expedition was an absolute disaster. One of Churchill's ideas, the idea was to attack the German's flank and possibly cut off their advanced forces by landing men in Antwerp. They selected the Royal Naval Division for this job, as Churchill was First Lord of the Admiralty, and because the Army had no men to spare. These men were either sailors or recent volunteers, keen and brave but without nearly enough training in ground warfare. Needless to say, nearly all the expedition ended up as prisoners of war, or dead.

The reference to Samson's armoured cars is the first use of motor vehicles in a war - actually "armed cars" rather than the type of armoured cars that came along later; they were commandeered cars with metal plate fitted as armour, and sometimes a machine gun. At least one lorry was fitted with a 3-pdr Naval gun. Samson and Capper felt that this work was a better use of the RNAS forces than aeroplanes in the situation of the time, and in the fluid, pre-trench war they played a part in stemming the German advance.
