Post your pics of poppies here. Whether you've taken pics of poppies at cemeteries, memorials, during parades or worn by friends, families or veterans, please share!
Hi Andy There are some beautiful photos here http://www.betterphoto.com/gallery/dynoGall2.asp?catID=501&pageID=4&rows=12&contestCatID=&camID= CTNana p.s. I don't know how you make a link to the www.bbc.co.uk but in the story of Harry Patch, one of 5 surviving WW1 veterans, there are also some lovely shots. p.p.s. best wishes to your sister and her husband
Dad and I are going tomorrow, to pay our respects, we have a poppy cross each we brought back from Flanders. I'll take some pic's of all the poppies and poppy wreaths. Then we will go to the IWM to see the new exhibition.
I have sort of "adopted" a local Memorial that stands in the front of a church about 10 minutes from me. Unlike the other two memorials within 10 minutes walking distance, this one doesn't get a lot of attention. The attached pictures are of the Pembroke Road Memorial, but not taken on Rembrance Day (I always feel odd taking pictures on the day). I have all the names listed but haven't had a chance to get their details off the CWGC. The other two memorials are: The Main One in the Centre, which is the main centre for the day: http://markamis-views.fotopic.net/p30763050.html and the Memorial about 2 mins from me on the Triangle, which is originally a Boer war Memorial (as can be seen by this 1907 postcard - it is virtually identical to now except around the Memorial there is grass, and the road around is very busy) http://legadz.free.fr/england/pages/war_mem.htm
Yes, that's why I've adopted it. Pretty forgotten about. Had a chat with the vicar about a year ago but it's a question of money/time/volunteers. But structurally sound.
Looks like lots of mops, buckets and hot soapy water required!! Isn't it sad when these monuments are left to the ravages of time? And isn't it wonderful that there are many volunteers up and down the country trying to ensure that it doesn't happen? Incidentally does anyone know why all early postcards were watermarked or stamped with the French "Carte de Poste"? I know it is the translation but were they a French idea or was the company who printed them located in France?
I believe it follows on from Cartes de Visite (the term used in English as well as French) which were visiting cards produced from studio photographs. These were sometimes posted, and probably progressed to postcards or Carte de Poste. French being the fashionable language of the upper classes (who were the ones who'd have used cartes de visite), the name progressed thus. However, maybe worth checking the history of postcards on google.
It is sad, and in some cases, as you say, volunteers do ensure that they are cleaned. But in this case, it seems that H&S concerns man that they can't just prop up a ladder because of the soft lawn. And I would accept that climbing onto the actual memorila may damage it. Stuck in a catch-22 without the money for proper equipemnt I'm afraid
I haven't talked to the vicar for over a year (even then only because I wanted to ask permission before I took photos in church grounds) - maybe a suggestion CTNana. Next time I'm down there, I'll have another chat.
These three pics were taken at Lone Pine, Gallipoli in late Sept 05. It was an emotional experience then and even now, going through the photos, it is quite moving.
Will add a photo of my Canadian Poppy later. Haven't unpacked yet and have just walked through the door. No internet connection where i was staying, all bongo drums and smoke signals. Take care all Sniper
Kyt, that is a very interesting memorial. Get on to EH about its condition, they may be able to help. Failing that petition the local Bishop. it is up to the Diocese to maintain these things within a churchyard. Will try and get some shots of my local memorial on Sunday, though I have noticed that the little crosses have already started to be planted in the grass. Of course that assumes I will remember. Andy, here's a Gallipoli shot I pinched offline for a local history book. View attachment 619 Nana, the reason they cant just point a steam cleaner is that it would literally destroy the stone work and damage the bronze. its a specialist clean only unfortunately..
That is beautiful and so is your avatar today 9th November. Where was that taken? Can we keep the poppies for the header please?
