An anthropologist turned into guerrilla fighter under the request of British Administration in '42. She formed a small band of scouts of some 150 Nagas (from one of the terrible head-hunting tribal groups), trained them with old muzzle-loading guns, and spread her activities over 800 sq m/2,000 sq Kms of mountainous jungle! She loved to carry stens. These Nagas had been trained firearms handling before Slim's support with better arms and reinforcements. The woman at her age of 30yrs, formed the 'Bower's Force of Nagas' and her men became so strong contender for the advancing mighty Japanese 15 army(the INA supported) that they Bounded to put price 'on her head'!
The harrasment, ambush etc from the Bower's Force increased in such a way that Lt Gen Kotuko Saito made himself writing in details for all these in his hand written account of 'Kohima',during the seize, which is regarded as the Stalingrad of the Far East.
Ursula however established watch-and-warn system by primary and secondary trails. With the help of these trails , thousands of deserters, escaped prisoners, bailed out aircrews, evaquees fled into India(in the NEFA region) from Burma..
Construction of Ledo Road, Battle of the Tennis Court etc etc once however gained support from her brilliant activity which may be in some direct/indirect ways but it is now the fact that Japanese gave up there for not only they unable to move forward, but also due to their non stop losses of men and logistics round the clock, in an area of some 2 0 0 0 sq Kms/8 0 0 sq m, by the formidable Bower's Force ~ under the 1st mighty woman guerrilla Commander Ursula G Bower, in the military history of WW2 ... !
