WW2 bomb alert hits London airport - Home News, UK - The Independent

London City Airport was closed this for nearly two hours this afternoon after a suspected World War 2 bomb was found nearby.

It reopened shortly after 6pm.

Earlier, a statement on the airport's website (London City Airport : Homepage) had announced: "London City Airport is still closed to inbound and outbound aircraft.

"This is a safety precaution taken by the airport due to an unexploded WW2 bomb being found at a site in East London."

Even after flights restarted, passengers were still being advised to check with airlines before travelling to the airport.

The BBC reported that the bomb was found on the site for the 2012 London Olympics at Stratford and that an air exclusion zone had been set up.

Only 24 hours earlier, commuters were delayed when another World War 2 bomb was found close to nearby Bromley-by-Bow station.

BOMB disposal experts have been called to the site of an unexploded World War II device found in a river in London's East End.

Businesses within a 200m area were evacuated and part of the London Underground system disrupted after the bomb was discovered at Sugar House Lane, near Bromley-by-Bow Tube station and the 2012 Olympic site, on Monday.

Police commander Simon O'Brien said the device was the size of a man and weighed about 1000kg.

"This is the largest World War II bomb to be discovered in the past three decades," he said.

"Royal Engineers and partner agencies have been incredibly heroic and have worked extremely hard to defuse the bomb.

"We're all working to resolve this issue with minimum disruption to Londoners as soon as possible."

The bomb had started to tick and ooze liquid at one stage, but stopped when treated by disposal experts.

A police spokesman said it was expected the bomb would be disarmed tonight or tomorrow.

A bomb disposal expert was hailed a hero last night for tackling a huge unexploded Second World War device - after it began ticking.

It could have caused carnage after being found near the 2012 London Olympics site.

But a Royal Engineer averted disaster by returning four times to the one tonne bomb during frantic Army efforts to defuse it.

The German weapon - the biggest to be found for 30 years - was discovered in the River Lee close to the Games site in East London by builders on Monday.

AdvertisementArmy experts spent four days preparing to detonate it - but had a shock when it suddenly started to tick and ooze liquid.

And in an extraordinary act of bravery, one Royal Engineer repeatedly returned to the device, dousing it in a salt water substance until the ticking stopped.

Relieved Metropolitan Police Commander Simon O'Brien: "We've got a hero working for London. We owe this man a great debt of gratitude."

Royal Engineers Major Matt Davies, 33, added: "What could have been a disaster has been averted."

The discovery caused chaos, with tube lines closed and businesses evacuated.

But troops were last night carrying out the final detonation of the bomb, believed to have been dropped as Hitler's Luftwaffe aimed for nearby gasworks.
