World War II bomb forces Amsterdam airport to close runway_English_Xinhua

BRUSSELS, June 3 (Xinhua) -- Schiphol airport in the Dutch capital of Amsterdam closed one of its runways following the discovery of an unexploded World War II bomb, Dutch media reported Tuesday.

The bomb, an English 500 pounder, was found in excavation work Monday afternoon in the nearby village of Vijfhuizen. The inhabitants and the workers in the village were evacuated.

Police have cordoned off the area and the bomb will be dismantled Wednesday. Experts recommend a 36-hour safety margin between the time a bomb is discovered and its dismantling.

A similar bomb was discovered and defused in the same area in 2006.

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands: Schiphol airport has closed one of its five runways after a World War II bomb was unearthed during excavations nearby.

Army explosives experts say the 500-pound (226-kilogram) bomb must remain still for 54 hours because it was moved during its discovery.

Bert van Denham from the local municipality says the bomb is expected to be removed on Thursday.

Schiphol spokeswoman Kathelijne Vermeulen said Tuesday flights are being diverted to other runways at the airport and no delays are expected.
