    This is one of a series of posts to mark the international Rugby players who served in, and survived, The Great War. If anyone has further information on the men concerned, Iā€™d be most grateful if it could be added to the thread.

    Coates, Vincent Middleton Hope MC played for England

    Internationals: 5 : 1913 SA ā€“ W+ (1t) F+ (3t) I+ (2t) S+

    Vincent Coates was born on 18 May 1889.

    Played as a Wing for: Monkton Combe School, Haileybury & Imperial Service College, Cambridge University (Blue 1907), Bridgwater, Bath Leicester, Richmond, Barbarians, Somerset

    Profession: Medicine

    War service: Captain, Royal Army Medical Corps. He was awarded the Military Cross in the field during the Battle of the Somme ā€“ Gazetted 2 October 1916. Mentioned in Despatches.

    Remarks: Played for Barbarians: v Cheltenham (8-11) v Penarth (10-10) 1910. Somerset County Cricket Club.

    He died on 14 November 1934 at Maidenhead from a fall from a train.

    Thanks very much for your research. Unfortunately, I can't read the obituary - it prints out about 30mm x 50mm - is there a way of enlarging it?
