Walter Butcher : Rugby Player

    This is one of a series of posts to mark the international Rugby players who served in, and survived, The Great War. If anyone has further information on the men concerned, I’d be most grateful if it could be added to the thread.

    Butcher, Walter Vincent played for England

    Internationals: 7 : 1903 S- ; 1904 W= I+ S- ; 1905 W- I- S-

    Walter Butcher was born on 2 February 1878

    Played as a Half-back for: Carlisle Grammar School, Bristol, Streatham, Barbarians, Gloucestershire

    Profession: Railway Engineer – Indian State Railways

    War service: Captain, Royal Engineers in 1917.

    Remarks: Butcher arrived at Bath as an unknown in 1902, and played for his club’s First XV, and for England, in his first year. Played for Barbarians: v Plymouth (8-15) v Penarth (5-8) in 1905. Surrey County Cricket Club 2nd XI

    He died on 26 August 1957 at Bexhill

    Butcher played two games for Surrey 2nd X1 in 1905, a Minor Counties match v Yorkshire and another one against Lancashire. He was a top order batsmen and his best score was 28 against Lancashire.

    Thanks for that ... ( though I'm not too happy he scored against Lancashire !! :p )
