During the 1st phase of War 2,the Luftwaffe provided a lot air support to the Wehrmacht. From Sept’39 the Luftwaffe’s equipped with the Dornier Do-17, Heinkel He-111 alongwith Junkers Ju-88. They helped Nazis to overcome in Europe within next three years. They were mostly daylight raiders [till the night Blitz of ‘40/41 over the Channel] with a medium range capability, sometimes even well beyond the advancing German armies.

Hence,RAF was the 1st to introduce a regular bomber tradition in the War 2,and went with the Vickers Wellington, A W Whitley, and H P Hampden. Necessity of long range heavy bombers realized a little bit later.. However, the RAF [Bomber Command ’41], introduced H P Halifax [2+2 engine] heavy bombers, later joined by the powerful Avro Lancaster,a confident strategic night heavy bomber till ’42.

The mighty 8th Air Force/USAF,meanwhile joined with RAF alongwith their B-17s/B-24s, by 1942.By then the air raid ability of the allies expanded beyond Europe.

Bombers, heavy bombers, long range bombers along with night-raiders made it possible much earlier, the destruction of Axis War-mechanism.
