IT was a remarkable wedding that stirred memories of wartime Britain and proved that falling in love can happen at any age.

Margaret Pearson Kingsley served with the famous Dambusters Squadron while Cyril Merle was fighting with the RAF Dutch Spitfire Squadron during the darkest days of the Second World War.

They only met five years ago at an RAF care home but yesterday 93-year-old Margaret and 92-year-old Cyril decided to show the world how they feel about each other.

The war veterans were married at an 11th century church near the home in Storrington, West Sussex, surrounded by family, including Cyril’s two daughters, grandchildren, friends and RAF airmen.

Margaret, who has been married twice before, said: “I never thought this would happen again but I love him with all my heart.”

Cyril, who has battled back from a stroke to play keyboards and act as DJ at the home’s weekly tea dances, added: “This may seem a little late in the day but it’s something we both wanted to do. She’s the most caring woman you could hope to meet. I feel very lucky.”

The marriage unites two stories of courage and sacrifice in wartime Britain. Margaret was 23 when she joined the RAF in 1939 and worked as a driver with 617 Dambusters squadron.

On May 16, 1943, she drove the men of Bomber Command to their aircraft before they left on the dam-busting raids.

The bouncing bombs breached two dams in Germany’s Ruhr Valley but eight aircraft and 53 crew were lost. Margaret recalls: “My work meant I was driving a lot of men to their deaths and it’s something that still leaves me tearful.”

Cyril was 22 when he became a leading aircraftsman with the RAF Dutch Spitfire Squadron in 1942. The squadron, based in Southport, Merseyside, lost 18 pilots in action.
