I am trying to work out which regiment my ancestor John Duncan may have joined. Born in 1751, he wrote to his mother having listed himself a soldier in His Majesty's service at Edinburgh about September 1775. He was writing from Glasgow, about to embark for Ireland. He next appears at Prestbury, Cheshire in December 1784 - still a soldier at his marriage to Martha Arrowsmith. He has left the service by 1788 when he starts recording children with Martha Harrowsmith in Cabrach, Aberdeenshire. One son's death certificate records his father as a regimental pensioner. Does anyone know which regiment may have been in Ireland and then Cheshire at this time?
