His brother, Cyril, was killed during the Battle of the Somme in 1916 (Fuller, 1963, 183), the first of several deaths of loved ones. Following the war, Shepard continued his connections with Punch, becoming part of its senior staff in 1921 (Moritz, 1963, 383).
