And then of course there were the African American soldiers who also went unrecognised for waaaay too long ! Pictures of African Americans During World War II America is a fascinating subject all by itself ... don't you think ?? Britain didn't have to go through all the same rigamarole at that time !! Annie
My limited knowledge in this area is confined to the Tuskegee Airmen of the 332nd FG...and the 99th FS before them. Have you come across these excellent threads, Annie? http://ww2chat.com/forums/general-topics/2566-windrush-west-indians.html http://ww2chat.com/forums/west-indies/2438-jamaicans-raf.html http://ww2chat.com/forums/west-indies/2436-barbadians-raf.html http://ww2chat.com/forums/books-films/1299-member-raf-indeterminate-race.html Just a few of the threads regarding the great melting pot that was the RAF etc. Of course, you will have noticed that this forum is very focussed on recognising the unsung heroes.
I need to take some time and go through the threads that are already here .... but I see one and it makes me think of something else !! .... and then I'm off on a tangent !! :becky: Which reminds me .... we were researching a WW1 British regiment and found there were a lot of Americans on the rolls couldn't understand it until we saw the US draft papers and found they were all black and originally from Jamacia and Tobago etc ..... obviously had emigrated to America but wanted to fight for Britain .... fascinating stuff ..... it's things like that that side track me I'm afraid !!
I think all of us here recognise your love of going off on tangents. We all do it regularly so post away!
