Budapest district to be evacuated after two-ton WWII bomb unearthed - Caboodle.hu

A WWII bomb of around two tonnes was found in Budapest's 9th district near the Pest side of the river on Monday, bomb disposal commander Gábor Hajdú told MTI.

From 0900 hours on Tuesday everyone living within a radius of one kilometre - about 15,000 people - will be evacuated, he said.

The Lágymányosi Danube bridge as well as some major thoroughfares and streets will be closed for traffic. Petőfi Bridge will remain open but vehicles will not be allowed to turn at the bridgehead.

The suburban railway connecting the city centre with Csepel will also be suspended, he said.

The type of the bomb, found on a construction site, has not yet been identified as its detonator is covered in soil. Neither are the exact dimensions of the explosive known.

Bomb disposal experts are going to remove and defuse the bomb on Tuesday morning and the operation is expected to last for several hours.

The bomb disposal officer emphasised that no one is in danger. The construction site is strictly guarded.

Evacuation will start at 0900 and will hopefully be completed before noon, Deputy Mayor of the district told MTI.

Sick people living in the area will be delivered to hospital for a day, he said.

Public transport will operate until 1100, allowing all to leave the area safely.

The residents of the area will probably be allowed to return home late on Tuesday evening.
