A man discovered two artillery rounds when they rolled out from under his cooker while he was making a meal at his home in Lincolnshire.

Bomb disposal experts were called to the man's house on George Street in Bourne to deal with the two rounds.

A spokesperson from Lincolnshire Police South Division said the rounds, which were 18in (45cm) long, were initially thought to be live.

The rounds, which were declared safe, were believed to be from World War I.

Two neighbouring houses on George Street were evacuated, the road was closed and people living nearby were advised to stay indoors until the bomb disposal team arrived.

The artillery rounds were taken by the bomb disposal team to RAF Wittering.

The police spokesperson said: "Officers at the scene gathered that the grandfather of the man who found the artillery had probably brought it back with him after the First World War.

"They were not live rounds, so did not pose any danger."
