CityNews: WWII Vet Frustrated After Being Removed For Poppy Sales

He risked his life to fight the good fight during the Second World War, but now a Toronto veteran is fighting a much different sort of battle, all in order to sell Remembrance Day poppies.

Alan Lawrence was tossed from private property in front of the Bay at Yonge and Bloor Friday for trying to sell the annual fundraising items, something he's been doing for 20 years.

The veteran doesn't mince words and his shock was still evident 24 hours later.

"You wouldn't have a bloody job if it wasn't for people like me who saved you, your mothers, your parents from being killed by Hitler years ago," he said out of frustration Saturday.

After enlisting in the British Navy at the age of 15, Lawrence saw action not only on the deadly north Atlantic and Mediterranean runs, but on D-Day as well.

Shocked that such a distinguished veteran would be treated in such fashion, passersby stormed into the property management office. An apology from the management soon followed.

Always the perseverant type, Lawrence promised to be back at it Sunday, fighting the good fight once again.

Still, the Royal Canadian Legion recommends members get permission first before conducting poppy sales.

I hope the company gets plenty of negative publicity - enough to put their hands in their own pockets and make a sizeable contribution as an apology
