All, forgot my favorite POW movie, but mentioned by Spidge. "Stalag 17." Great, great, great. I also agree with War Hawk about "Hogan's Heroes," wonderful. The episode where they convince Hockschteder that the war is over is priceless.

Anyone remember "McHale's Navy?" That ranks up there as a very funny series.

I like "When Trumpets Fade" And A "Bridge to Far" and I like "Das Boot". Some of these I already posted that I like them.

If you want to read a great book about the Huertgen Forest (When Trumpets Fade), try to find Paul Bosch's "Road to Hurtgen" (1962). Buy it if you can, because it's a collectible.

Good film and worth watching.

These films attempt to focus on the personalities rather than the events. I feel that they are powerful movies with excellent performances from the talented actors.

my love of my life is in that video,the young main german soldier that is the only surving german soldier.

Does anyone know anything about that actor? I have only seen him in that midnight clear movie and never saw him again in other movies!

All Quiet On the Western Front was a movie about WWI, not WWII.

I appreciate the story behind U571 is a perversion, however, if this film is taken as a wartime 'romp' and nothing else it is a good film, and as a side note, it is the most authentic depiction of submarine life I have yet seen - Das boot is inherently accurate also but the technological advances enjoyed in film making (for me) give it the edge.

It opens with a 'rookie soldier' carrying his sergeant back from Hurtgen forest on his back, He rejoins a unit and is very reluctantly promoted and put in charge of a bunch of green recruits.

He really wants to be sectioned and released from the army, but he ends up taking more responsibility and moulding himself into his new position as team leader.

I think the overall theme is how the ordinary person can be pushed into performing extraordinary deeds in times of need.

It is not too glam or glitzy and definately does not have the typical american 'duty-superhero' running through it.

 

That is a good movie.
