Took off Upwood for a low-level (between 500 and 600 feet) navigation exercise, base-Gillingham-Stratford-upon-Avon-Hungerford-Cottesmore-base. While flying on the second leg, the crew strayed 15 miles off track and at 1028 hrs the starboard wingtip was sliced off by a barrage balloon cable in the Birmingham defensive area. Out of control the aircraft crashed.

Took off 1152 hrs Kinloss for a cross-country which at 1240 hrs ended in scenes of terrible devastation in the vicinity of Bank Head Farm, Humble, some eight miles SS of Haddington in East Lothian. Eyewitnesses report the Wellington cruising at around 5,000 feet when the overcast sky was lit by a flash, followed by an explosion and debris raining down. (accident investigators concluded that the outer section of the starboard wing sheared away)
